The history of the Soundhouse

The Soundhouse is a pioneering performing arts project in Plymouth which has gained an international reputation for innovation and creativity. Working at the interface of community music, education, and training the Soundhouse combines musical excellence with accessibility.

Originally operating from several sites within the Estover Community College campus, the project has attracted capital grants amounting to £1.55 million from the Arts Council of England (Arts Lottery Foundation), South West Regional Development Agency, Learning and Skills Council, Garfield Western and the Nation Wide Foundation

Our aim is to help you enjoy music from access to excellence.

The Soundhouse is a unique collaboration between Estover Community College and Estover Percussion Project. It brings together cutting-edge technologies, leading youth bands, musicians, teachers and a truly unique learning environment.

Facilities: The Soundhouse has a brand new performing arts centre building, funded by the National Lottery, South West Regional Development Agency, the Learning and Skills Council, the Garfield Weston Foundation and the Nationwide Foundation. The building was completed in 2001.

Studio 9

During 2004/05 Studio 9 came on stream and hosted the final phases of the Soundworks Project. Changes to LSC funding priorities resulted in Soundworks no longer being able to sustain a high level of provision. Some funds were raised privately but were insufficient to maintain the staff team many of whom were able to gain full time employment elsewhere. At present Studio 9 continues to be used by disabled students enrolled on the certificate of popular music course and by the adult disability group ‘Sound Experience’

Where is the Soundhouse? The Soundhouse is based in Estover, an estate on the outskirts of Plymouth in Devon, in the South West of England, UK. See a map. At present all Soundhouse courses are held in Plymouth, either in the Estover building or locations in Plymouth City Centre.
